Transliteration & representation of characters

All languages written with Latin script are represented in their original forms. Depending on the model and version of web-browser, these may be reproduced in various forms and qualities. Netscape and some earlier versions of MS Internet Explorer do not support multilingual script even in Latin script, such as Central European, Baltic or Scandinavian languages. To address this problem, users may want to download components to display script versions. Installing such components is up to the individual user. A great variety of multilingual support components is easily accessible on the Web, usually found by using one of the common search engines such as e.g. Google or Alltheweb. As various operating systems require different solutions, we defer from recommending any multilingual support in particular.

As for the Slavonic languages (Belarus, Russian, Ukrainian) represented in “Baltic Sea States,” they follow the transliteration standard of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO-standard). As some varieties of ISO-transliteration are allowed for, a version similar to the one generally used by Scandinavian Slavists has been opted for.
